How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac
Good news: your Mac already opens HEIC files — Preview and Photos handle them natively. The problem comes when you need to share those photos: many websites, email clients, and Windows PCs still choke on .heic. Here are three free ways to turn them into JPGs that work everywhere.
Method 1: Convert in your browser (best for batches)
If you have dozens of photos to convert, this is the fastest route. PicUplift's HEIC to JPG converter decodes your photos locally with WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded to any server.
- Open the converter in Safari, Chrome, or Edge on your Mac.
- Drag in your .heic files — you can drop dozens at once.
- Keep the default 90% quality (or lower it if you want smaller files), then click convert.
- Download each JPG individually or grab them all as a ZIP.
No signup, no watermark, no daily limit. Because everything runs on your device, there's no queue and no waiting for a server.
Method 2: Use Preview (built in, one at a time)
Preview is already on your Mac, and it exports JPGs in a few clicks. This is the simplest option for a single photo.
- Double-click the .heic file to open it in Preview.
- Go to File → Export.
- Set the format to JPEG and pick a quality (90% is a good default).
- Choose where to save, then click Save.
The downside: Preview exports one file at a time. For a folder full of photos, use Method 1 instead.
Method 3: Export from Photos (good if your library lives there)
If your photos are already in the Photos app, you can export JPG copies without touching the originals.
- Select the photos in Photos.
- Go to File → Export → Export Photos.
- Set Photo Kind to JPEG and pick your quality.
- Click Export and choose a destination folder.
This keeps your HEIC originals untouched in the library while giving you JPG copies to share. Note that Photos exports one quality setting for the whole batch — if you need different sizes per photo, use Method 1.
Which method should you pick?
- Dozens of photos, right now → Method 1 (browser converter).
- Just one photo → Method 2 (Preview, already installed).
- Photos already in your library → Method 3 (Photos export).
FAQ
Will converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so a tiny amount of detail is lost in any conversion. At 90% quality the difference is invisible in normal viewing. If you need pixel-perfect copies, convert to PNG instead.
Is it safe to use an online converter for personal photos?
Many converters upload files to their servers. PicUplift processes photos in your browser and never uploads them. The HEIC decoder loads from this site only when you start your first conversion. For offline use, download the complete website folder, keep its assets folder, and open heic-to-jpg.html locally. We use Google Analytics to measure visits and interactions (such as page views, scrolling, and clicks). Images are always processed locally and are never uploaded.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on older macOS versions too?
Yes. Preview has supported HEIC since macOS High Sierra (10.13), and the browser method works on any Mac running a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge.
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC instead of JPG?
Since iOS 11, iPhones default to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) because it stores the same quality at roughly half the file size of JPG. The catch is compatibility: Apple devices handle it natively, but Windows, many websites, and older software don't. You can switch your iPhone to JPG under Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
